The Tool Guide

Five Tools, One Home Bar

What each tool actually does, and the one technique tip that makes it work properly.

Weighted Boston cocktail shaker

The Shaker

Boston Shaker

Two tins, one seal — built to chill and dilute a drink fast without watering it down. The wide tin does the shaking; the narrow one traps the ice on the strain.

Best for

Spirit-forward cocktails ·Shaken sours ·Fast dilution
Technique tipSeal it with a firm downward palm strike on the top tin, not a twist — twisting is what jams it shut.

Belmont stainless steel cocktail jigger

The Jigger

Stainless Steel Jigger

The one tool that separates a good cocktail from a guess. Two cones in one, measuring a full and half pour with a level top for accuracy.

Best for

Accurate pours ·Balanced cocktails ·Consistent batches
Technique tipFill to the inner rim, not the brim — most jiggers are calibrated a hair below the top edge.

M&B stainless steel cocktail muddler

The Muddler

Cocktail Muddler

Presses fresh herbs, fruit and sugar to release oils and juice before the shake — the difference between a mojito that tastes like mint and one that just looks like it.

Best for

Mojitos ·Old Fashioneds ·Caipirinhas
Technique tipPress and twist, don't pound — smashing herbs releases bitter chlorophyll along with the flavour you want.

Osaka weighted cocktail bar spoon

The Bar Spoon

Weighted Bar Spoon

A long twisted handle for stirring spirit-forward drinks without bruising them, and a flat end for layering or crushing a garnish.

Best for

Martinis ·Negronis ·Layered drinks
Technique tipSpin the spoon between your fingers, not your wrist — a smooth rotation chills the drink without adding air bubbles.

Stanford gold Hawthorne cocktail strainer

The Strainer

Cocktail Strainer

Holds back the ice and muddled fruit while you pour, for a clean glass every time — essential for anything shaken or muddled.

Best for

Shaken cocktails ·Muddled drinks ·Double straining
Technique tipFor citrus or herb-heavy drinks, strain twice through a fine sieve to catch pulp a Hawthorne strainer misses.

Bar Tools FAQ

The practical questions people actually ask before they buy.

We reply within 24 hours — info@maltandbrew.com

Do I need a cocktail shaker, or can I just stir?

It depends on the drink. Anything with citrus, sugar, cream or egg white needs a hard shake to combine and chill properly. Spirit-forward drinks with no juice — a Martini, a Negroni, an Old Fashioned — are stirred, so a jigger and bar spoon get more daily use than a shaker in most home bars.

What size is a standard jigger?

Most Australian jiggers measure 30mL on one side and 60mL on the other (a single and double nip). Ours follow that standard, so any recipe written in nips or standard pours will measure out correctly.

What's the difference between a Boston and cobbler shaker?

A Boston shaker is two tins that seal together and need a separate strainer. A cobbler shaker is one piece with a built-in strainer cap — easier for beginners, slightly harder to get a perfect seal on. We stock both.

What do I actually need to start a home bar?

A shaker, a jigger and a bar spoon will cover almost every classic cocktail. Add a strainer and a muddler once you're mixing regularly. Read our full guide to setting up a home bar for a proper shopping list.
